Foam Firmness vs. Foam Density: Why it’s Important?

When it comes to choosing the right foam for your pillow or cushion, two important factors to consider are foam firmness and foam density. Although these terms are often used interchangeably, they are actually two distinct measurements that have different implications for the quality and comfort of the product.

Foam density is a measure of weight to volume ratio, which indicates how much mass is in a given amount of space. Higher density foams, typically above 1.2 lb/cubic foot, tend to be more durable and have a longer lifespan. This is because the higher density provides more support and resistance to compression, which reduces the wear and tear on the foam over time.

On the other hand, foam firmness is a measure of how soft or hard the foam feels when pressure is applied. Firmness is determined by a standardized test that measures the force required to compress the foam to a certain percentage of its original height. This test is called the Indentation Force Deflection (IFD) test, and it is commonly used in the foam industry to rate the firmness of different foam types.

So, why is understanding the difference between foam firmness and foam density important? When selecting a foam for a product like a pillow or cushion, it's important to consider both factors in order to ensure optimal comfort and durability. A foam that is too soft may not provide enough support and may wear out quickly, while a foam that is too firm may be uncomfortable to use.

The Big Spoon Pillow, for example, uses a foam with a density of 1.9lb, which provides both durability, support and longevity for the pillow. The firmness of the foam is also carefully calibrated to ensure that it is soft and comfortable to use, while still providing enough resistance to maintain its shape and prevent flattening.

In summary, foam firmness and density are two different measurements that have a significant impact on the quality and comfort of foam products. By understanding these differences and selecting a foam that is both firm and dense, you can ensure that your pillow or cushion provides the support and durability you need for optimal comfort and long-lasting use.
